Plant of the family Compositae, with about
200 species. There are many cultivated
varieties but some uncertainty as to the wild
species from which they have been evolved. In
the Far East the common chrysanthemum has
been cultivated for more than 2,000 years,
and is the national emblem of Japan. The
ox-eye daisy Leucanthemum vulgare, now placed
in a closely related genus to the
chrysanthemum, and the corn marigold
Chrysanthemum segetum are common weeds in
Britain. Chrysanthemums may be grown from
seed, but are more usually reproduced by
cutting or division. They were introduced to
England in 1789.
